While listening to NPR recently, a story about the documentary ‘Project Nim’ came on. In the 1970s, a infant chimpanzee was taken from its mother and put in human care for a Columbia University psychology experiment. The chimpanzee was to be treated exactly as a human and to be taught sign language. They really went all out. The mother even breast fed the chimp and raised it alongside her 13-year-old daughter. The project was a complete failure and the chimp persistently behaved like a wild animal. Surprised? Not really. He does look pretty mischievous in that red sweater.
